Missional Equipping

Summer Learner 2015

‘…the restoration of the Church will surely come only from a new type of monasticism which has nothing in common with the old but a complete lack of compromise in a life lived in accordance with the Sermon on the Mount  in the discipleship of Christ. I think it is time to gather people together to do this…’
  -Dietrich Bonhoeffer

There is a generation rising up who longs to see His Kingdom come to cities. This generation cares less for entertainment, nor wants to escape from the world, but longs to be engaged in the midst of where Jesus is at. They know it isn’t going to be changed overnight and so they are willing to risk much which will look “edgy” to most.  There is a generation longing to be equipped and released to go live out the gospel of the Kingdom.

As a response, we are inviting others to join in this journey with us. As a Summer Learner, you are invited to join us in the rhythm of life where we as a community have been “doing” life together for 6 plus years. As a diverse group of people, we have come together because of Jesus and as a result we have seen the likes of spiritual family formed between each other. As we have found the joy of living life together, we desire to share with others anything and everything we have learned along the way as we all journey together in pursuit of the King and His Kingdom.

How the summer learners came to be was when a few college students ask the question, “what would it look like to move in for the summer”.  So, we started with a few students that summer and every year thereafter, we have seen students who have asked the same question.

What or Who is a Summer Learner

As things progress, we have seen an increased desire to learn together much like we might see in Acts 19, where Paul begins to develop disciples and send them out.  As a result Paul and some disciples begin to see all of Asia having heard of Jesus.  So, if you desire to come, learn, or experience things that we have been learning, then we welcome you.

Here at the Refuge, there are about 30 or so people living togethr becoming more like family. In an effort to multiply, we have sent out a group of people (20 or so) into a nearby neighborhood that was in ruins in an effort to see restoration. Those who will be joining us this summer will be joining a community-wide group (made up of specifically two neighborhoods, but an extension of many others going after the same thing) of all ages who live together to live and learn about Jesus and justice.

Summer 2015

This summer, we are opening up the doors to house college students and adults (in dorm like conditions) who would like an opportunity to join our community for the summer and into the rhythm we find ourselves in.  Along with doing life together, we will spend quantity time together learning about the King and His Kingdom.  Practically speaking, we will be sharing meals together, talking about how we might impact neighborhoods and networks throughout this city and beyond.

This summer is designed to encourage and equip people who love Christ to become people who also follow Christ in every place, every day, and every relationship. It is a small window during the summer months to introduce people through doing life together and intentional conversations how to be a “missionary” wherever you are. During our time together there will be times set apart to talk through things like “how do I pursue the King and His Kingdom in this culture” and “how do I become neighborly in a nation who that does not know their neighbor?” It’s a place to ask honest questions, to share your story, to be known, to have challenging discussions, and also apply “missional” living on a daily basis. In short, we hope you leave at the end of the summer more postured in intimacy with God the Father, Son, and Spirit, to be a disciple and go make disciples in everyday life as an ordinary person, motivated by obedience.

At the Refuge, we hunger to call people to something more than just going to church one day a week, but how we might be the Church.  In addition, we are exhausted by the continual decline of our cities. We think now is the time to act.  Now is the time to respond to the window of opportunity for God’s people to return back to Him and to work together to bring systemic change in this generation as we go forward.
